Step 17: Imagining Robin Hood 👤 or 👥 - (2 products, same ideas) (20 MP)
When considering historical fiction, Robin Hood is an interesting case study. Because writers of historical fiction live in different time periods, their perceptions of the past and how to display it are often shaped by their own times. Because there are so many different versions of Robin Hood, it is easy to see how different authors, directors, and stylists interpreted Robin Hood differently depending on the AUTHOR's time period. In reality, the 1100's were the same, whether we're talking about them in the 1940's or 2015. However, as you will see, the imagination of writers and filmmakers when picturing Robin Hood was shaped by the styles and trends not of the 1100's, but of the writers' eras.
Look at the images and short YouTube clips below. As you do, think about how Robin Hood is portrayed. What is he wearing? What is his hair like? What kind of music is playing? What is the tone of each image or video? As you look at the images and videos, complete the chart in your packet. Also think about how each portrayal of Robin Hood creates a slightly different picture of life in his times. Would a viewer watching these Robin Hood films come away with a more or less accurate view of the 1100's?
